In this stunning follow-up to his acclaimed debut, Thunderer, Felix Gilman’s brave hero returns from one thrilling and dangerous quest only to confront another. In a magical landscape where time is meaningless, reality precarious, and countless selves work toward countless possible futures, one man must seek a city’s truth—and rediscover his own. Imprisoned with a prophetic half human, half beast, the lost man learns his name: Arjun. Slowly the terrible memories emerge, and at last he remembers where—and when—he has been. . . . In the last days of the once great city of Ararat, Arjun is just another ghost lost in the shadows of the Mountain. To some, the Mountain is a myth, to others, a weapon. Above all, it is a dark palace leaving its seekers to wander the city below. For no matter how far one walks, the Mountain never draws closer, and time itself becomes another trap. Rescued by two sisters from the mindless Know-Nothings who erode what’s left of the city, Arjun volunteers to retrieve their long-lost third sister from a ghost like himself: Brace-Bel, another man out of time. It will require a perilous trek through ruins to a decadent mansion—one surrounded by traps and devices that could not possibly exist yet. And what awaits Arjun inside is something he could not possibly have imagined. As he struggles to recover the lost girl and piece the fragments of his life back together, Arjun knows he must finally return to the beast to hear the rest of its prophecy. But each step is more treacherous than the last . . . and the beast who knows his fate may pose the most deadly trial yet. A spellbinding novel of imagination and intrigue, Gears of the City will propel you into an adventure like no other, in a world like no other.

Now my magic is changing and mechanical people are beginning to look like you and me. Others have claimed it is my fault, but can I be blamed for things out of my control? My lover is trying to protect me from the fallout, but even a duke can’t fight back against the magistrate all alone. This is my story of how a street rat became a duke’s lover and the beacon of hope and hate.

Why should public administrators care about city planning? Is city planning not a field ruled by architects and public works personnel? Much of city planning in fact requires expertise in areas other than buildings and infrastructure, and with city planning expertise, urban administrators are empowered to make more informed decisions on matters that involve budgeting, economic development, tax revenues, public relations, and ordinances and policies that will benefit the community. City Planning for the Public Manager is designed to fill a gap in the urban administration literature, offering students and practitioners hands-on, practical advice from experts with diverse city administration experience, and demonstrating where theory and practice intersect. Divided into three sections, the book provides an overview of the life cycle of a municipality and its services, explores city planning applications for planners on a strict budget, and walks the reader through a real-life planning research project, demonstrating how it was formulated, implemented, and analyzed to produce usable results. Topics explored include justifications for specific city services, internal and external benchmarking used for city planning, common technical tools (e.g., GIS), legal aspects of planning and zoning, environmental concerns, transportation, residential planning, business district planning, and infrastructure. City Planning for the Public Manager is required reading for students of urban administration and practicing city administrators interested in improving their careers and their communities.

Four novels of the punk vampire hunter from the Bram Stoker Award–winning author and “most original voice in the world of vampire fiction since Anne Rice” (Film Threat). Saved by modern medicine before she could die, Sonja Blue is a living vampire who still possesses a soul and is determined to hunt down creatures that prey on the innocent, while searching for the vampire lord who created her. Sunglasses After Dark: As Sonja investigates a sleazy televangelist named Catherine Wheele, she finds herself up against a powerful inhuman adversary. Her greatest foe remains the Other, the demonic personality with whom she is locked in a constant battle for control of their shared body. Can Sonja overcome her inner demon in time to rescue an innocent man from Catherine Wheele’s unholy clutches? In the Blood: As Sonja continues to take out her rage on demonic blood-drinkers, her hunt is attracting attention: Morgan, the vampire lord who remade her twenty years ago, wants to bring his beloved daughter to heel. At the same time, Sonja has found her existence entwined with that of a mortal—a psychic detective. Is love possible for someone like her? Paint It Black: Following a self-destructive affair in New Orleans, the Other, Sonja’s demonic alter ego, is stronger than ever. And when Sonja learns that Morgan may be behind a string of murders in New York City, she heads straight for a face-to-face showdown. A Dozen Black Roses: A city within a city where the undead roam free, Deadtown is dangerous for humans and vampires alike. As a gang war rages between the old guard and the new, Deadtown’s innocents are caught in the crossfire. Only Sonja Blue can save them. To see justice done, she will play both ends against the middle to save Deadtown—or else burn it to the ground. Award-winning author Nancy A. Collins’s punk vampire series helped give rise to the urban fantasy genre and her “bone-colored, blood-smeared star—for she is certainly a star—stands bright and hot at the pinnacle of the horror heap” (Joe R. Lansdale).

As understanding of the engineering design and configuration processes grows, the recognition that these processes intrinsically involve imprecise information is also growing. This book collects some of the most recent work in the area of representation and manipulation of imprecise information during the syn thesis of new designs and selection of configurations. These authors all utilize the mathematics of fuzzy sets to represent information that has not-yet been reduced to precise descriptions, and in most cases also use the mathematics of probability to represent more traditional stochastic uncertainties such as un controlled manufacturing variations, etc. These advances form the nucleus of new formal methods to solve design, configuration, and concurrent engineering problems. Hans-Jurgen Sebastian Aachen, Germany Erik K. Antonsson Pasadena, California ACKNOWLEDGMENTS We wish to thank H.-J. Zimmermann for inviting us to write this book. We are also grateful to him for many discussions about this new field Fuzzy Engineering Design which have been very stimulating. We wish to thank our collaborators in particular: B. Funke, M. Tharigen, K. Miiller, S. Jarvinen, T. Goudarzi-Pour, and T. Kriese in Aachen who worked in the PROKON project and who elaborated some of the results presented in the book. We also wish to thank Michael J. Scott for providing invaluable editorial assis tance. Finally, the book would not have been possible without the many contributions and suggestions of Alex Greene of Kluwer Academic Publishers. 1 MODELING IMPRECISION IN ENGINEERING DESIGN Erik K.
