Set in the late twenty-first century, this novel unfolds a sombre and pessimistic vision of mankind confronting inevitable destruction. Mary Shelley was ahead of her time - arguably by 200 years. For when her novel 'The Last Man' was published in 1826 with a plot featuring a deadly global pandemic, the public was not impressed. In modern days, it looks far more current. Her first novel since 'Frankenstein', 'The Last Man' is set in the late 21st century as humankind is virtually wiped out by a global pandemic. There are no zombies, but fans of 'The Walking Dead' will appreciate the apocalyptic theme and the way Shelley follows the fortunes of a small group of survivors as they unravel emotionally. They include characters inspired by two men she was mourning: her husband and famous poet Percy Bysshe Shelley and the poet Lord Byron. Can they survive? Or is the human race going the way of the dinosaurs? Mary Shelley (1797–1851) earned her place in the pantheon of British novelists with her ground-breaking Gothic novel ‘Frankenstein’ (1818). Considered one of the first true works of science-fiction, the book became an instant bestseller. But she was far from a one-hit-wonder, producing a host of other novels, including 'Valperga', 'Perkin Warbeck' and 'The Last Man'. Most were not well received in her lifetime, though, only being fully appreciated from the 1960s. She moved in a circle of famed 19th-century writers and philosophers. She was married to the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley and spent time with Lord Byron. Her mother was the philosopher and feminist activist Mary Wollstonecraft and her father was the political philosopher William Godwin. Mary Shelley’s work has been adapted for TV, stage and film on many occasions, with Boris Karloff famously playing Frankenstein’s monster on screen in 1933. Other adaptations include ‘Mary Shelley's Frankenstein’ (1994) starring Kenneth Branagh and Robert De Niro and ‘Viktor Frankenstein’ (2015) starring Daniel Radcliffe and James McAvoy. Most recently, Elle Fanning portrayed Mary in Haifaa Al-Mansour’s film ‘Mary Shelley’ from 2017.

Taken from an ancient text found abandoned in a cave, The Last Man ends in 2100, "the last year of the world." A devastating worldwide plague has annihilated all of humanity except for one man, who chronicles the world's demise. This novel of apocalyptic horror, originally published in 1826, was rejected in its time and was out of print from 1833 to 1965, when the first Bison Books edition appeared.

In this unique, enlightening monograph, Toivo Koivukoski explores the circumstances that have led modern society to use the concept of progress as a surrogate cosmology that gives individuals a sense of place and purpose. By linking various historical paradigms from German Idealist philosophy to contemporary philosophies of technology, this work of political theory describes an alternative, immanent pattern of development that is, in a sense, driven by its own unintended consequences. The meditations outlined within this book map out the hypertext pathways of our global system, making its constitutive relations and underlying thought processes transparent. Koivukoski mirrors the new hyper-realities of electronic communications technologies by structuring the text in compact subchapters that are linked through an index of subjects that allows readers to 'find their own philosophy' by jumping to areas of interest. If, as he argues, history understood in a linear, lockstep fashion is over, then the ways of developing concepts should change respectively so that the sorts of retrievals, anticipations, loops, and leaps that characterize nonlinear, networked thinking are consciously realized in an identity of form and substance.

A chillingly plausible novel about the collapse of Italian society and one man's struggle to retain his humanity amid the horror "A bleak, lyrical tale that evokes Cormac McCarthy's The Road.... Gruesome, intense, and strange... a eurozone nightmare brought to life on the page."--James Lovegrove, Financial Times It is 2025, and Italy is on the brink of collapse. Borders are closed, banks withhold money, the postal service stalls. Armed gangs of drug-fuelled youths roam the countryside. "A fascinating tale…Readers who are into high-altitude adventure stories won’t be disappointed." —Associated Press In 1939 the Savage Mountain claimed its first victim. Born into vast wealth yet uneasy with a life of leisure, Dudley Wolfe, of Boston and Rockport, Maine, set out to become the first man to climb K2, the world’s second-highest mountain and, in the opinion of mountaineers, an even more formidable challenge than Mt. Everest. Although close to middle age and inexperienced at high altitude, Wolfe, with the team leader, made it higher than any other members of the expedition, but he couldn’t get back down. Suffering from altitude sickness and severe dehydration, he was abandoned at nearly 25,000 feet; it would be another sixty-three years before the author discovered his remains.

'Is there anything in sport to compare with the sustained excitement of a cricket match, especially a Test match, in which the advantage continually fluctuates one way and then the other, and when the match enters its last few minutes, all four results are still possible?' After entertaining countless radio listeners around the world for decades, who better to convey the breathless drama of a Test match cliffhanger than Henry Blofeld? Now, in Ten to Win . . . and the Last Man In, he has personally selected thirty matches featuring unforgettable finishes and brought them vividly to life again in his own inimitable way. Ranging from the match-winning bowling of F.R. Spofforth against W.G. Grace's England in 1882, via the first tied Test between Benaud's Australia and Worrell's West Indies in 1960, to the never-say-die batting of Ben Stokes in 2019, he picks out the key events and performances of each memorable match and describes them as only he can. Alongside the big-hitting heroics of Jessop in 1902 and Botham in 1981, he revisits less celebrated matches such as South Africa's hard-fought first Test win in 1906, as well as a crucial innings from Denis Compton in 1948 and a match-saving performance by a young Alan Knott in Guyana in 1968 - one of the most exciting matches he has ever witnessed first-hand. Filled with colourful detail and informed by insight gained from a lifetime immersed in the sport he loves, Henry Blofeld's latest book will leave the reader in no doubt - as he himself puts it - about 'what an absurdly irresistible game cricket can be'.

To my fellow martyrs, get yourself ready, your companion in the word and brother in the spirit Firebird Green Jr. is right back at you for the second time in two years, and he did not arrive at your number by mistake or on the magic carpet either, because it had outlasted its usefulness, retired and placed in storage with all the other outdated furniture for a better Promise that is in the high calling in Christ Jesus, the only begotten son of the most high God, who is a constant companion of the brethren and the keeper of all hope. The last time you heard from me, the magic carpet had me here and there, taken me on some very wild rides. I felt, at times, like I was riding on the back of Haley comet, after the tail had been cut off by the rings of Saturn! Listen in, audience, a female veteran that I know purchased and reviewed one of my first book, The Last Man Is Standing, and this is what she had to say: The book is interesting but you were all over the place. And make no mistake about it, she was right. I was all over the world. Listen in, saints, the Lord reflected light into my spirit on January 13, 2013, after I had been burned, pretty badly, on January 1, 2013, with a class 2 burn to the left Leg and foot, when I was attempting to cook the traditional New Years Day dinner! In the southern part of the nation, black-eyed peas and cabbages, and for the next three months, when I got up and said my morning prayer, with my leg elevated and extended, I would always add this, If not today, Lord maybe, tomorrow, and after two months, it finally started to grow a scab. After that, I knew it would not take long. Prayer had been answered and healing was on the way. In the Last Man Is Standing, God Told me to tell the whole truth about the past life that I had lived and hold back nothing, tell the good, the bad, and the ugly because it has everything to do about him. And it is his mercy and grace that endures forever. Amen. And that is what I tried to do, but now, after the life sentence that I received from God, in my last book, well, now in the The Last Man Stand and Walk the Green Mile, the sentence is death. So come along with me down the corridor of life and witness me being drawn through the passageway to my long way home, and you are welcome to join anytime. Come along! You are guaranteed not to be disappointed, and the blessing will abound.

This story is unique among the many books, large and small, that have been written about the Alamo. Few thinkers have enjoyed so pervasive an influence as Rousseau, who originated dissatisfaction with modernity. By exploring polarities articulated by Rousseau—nature versus society, self versus other, community versus individual, and compassion versus competitiveness—these fourteen original essays show how his thought continues to shape our ways of talking, feeling, thinking, and complaining. The volume begins by taking up a central theme noted by the late Allan Bloom—Rousseau's critique of the bourgeois as the dominant modern human type and as a being fundamentally in contradiction, caught between the sentiments of nature and the demands of society. It then turns to Rousseau's crucial polarity of nature and society and to the later conceptions of history and culture it gave rise to. The third part surveys Rousseau's legacy in both domestic and international politics. Finally, the book examines Rousseau's contributions to the virtues that have become central to the current sensibility: community, sincerity, and compassion. Contributors include Allan Bloom, François Furet, Pierre Hassner, Christopher Kelly, Roger Masters, and Arthur Melzer.
